recycled wool

recycled sweater christmas stockings

December 22, 2013 by Birdbrain 3 Comments

lou1

lou2Making Christmas stockings from recycled sweaters is great fun. The trick of course is having the right sweaters. I knew when I found this Jenny Ferguson pure wool sweater from Scotland that it was perfect. The whole quest involved in reusing adds to the adventure. When you are least expecting it, the absolutely perfect sweater speaks to you from a rack of ugly acrylics. With these teddies taking centre stage, a little needle felting on the top and a few seasonal buttons were all that was needed to make the stocking ready for Christmas morning.

test driving in Montreal

bbt2We were in Montreal for four days and I was able to give my new tote a thorough test drive. We loaded it up with all our purchases each day and it didn’t flinch. It is wide and deep, lined with durable canoe canvas with straps riveted and sewn–so it stood up to all the tests–even transporting une tarte aux bluets without incident!

I love Montreal and we were able to take in several design shows as well as enjoy the cuisine and the landscape. I put more pictures on instagram–the button is under Navigation on the right.  Below is a shot from Dog&Pony’s amazing hobby horses made from recycled fabric. We saw these at the Smart Design Show and there are many more photos of great things at this link.

I have fallen for boiled wool

December 6, 2013 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

I have fallen for boiled wool. I love the texture and the weight and of course the warmth. But I am coming to the end for this year. These are close to the last pieces for the season — Morticia finger frees and a pair of mittens with deep sheepskin cuffs.bbwff

finger free gloves and boiled wool mittens

December 5, 2013 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

I couldn’t resist sharing a watercolour sketch which I received today — of a pair of my finger-free gloves. I think this perfectly captures the spirit of wearing finger-frees.

aa

I have been busy filling orders for mittens, but there are also now some mittens made for the on-line store. This first is a pair of grape boiled wool with wool cuffs and the second is a pair of red wool flannel with sheepskin cuffs. Both are made from recycled 100% wool sweaters and lined with wool scarves. They are cozy warm and are now available in the store. The on-line store link is under Navigation on the right-hand side of the screen.

catch-up

December 3, 2013 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

I have been filling orders and there are still more to come. The finger-free gloves are surprisingly popular because they are really more of an indoor-accessory than a glove.  A functional sweater-bracelet which keeps you cozy and adds pizzaz.

Below that are two pairs of boiled wool mittens with shearling. I found some great shearling remnants recently so I will be making more of these and hope to have them in the on-line shop soon. They are beyond cozy.

The last picture is of some wonderful 100% wool and angora patterned sweaters I came upon. Just when I had given up hope of finding some good quality patterned woollen sweaters, these surfaced. I grew up with fair-isle sweaters and I love them. What a treat to find these. I have decided to give them a new lease on life as leg-warmers.

Here is one of my favourite people modelling some of the new things I have been making — cashmere infinity scarves, mittens and finger-free gloves as well as some of the new bags.  She makes everything look good.if1

more boiled woollies

November 14, 2013 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

One of the big joys of using recycled wool is the surprise at what is out there waiting. Who knew I would find a boiled wool jacket with embroidered birds? But that is also the downside–there are only three birds on the whole jacket–so these finger-free gloves are truly the only pair. Such jaunty, colourful birds! Too bad the jacket wasn’t covered with them. It did, however, have a daisy on another pocket and I am just pondering what to turn it into.ff bAnd here are more boiled woollen mittens with shearling cuffs. I am certainly not a furrier, but am learning to deal with this stuff which is so different from anything else I have ever sewn. I also have a white fox jacket given to me by a friend of my mother–it is even harder to deal with, but I am going to give it a try!bwpr

shearling added

November 13, 2013 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

I love to work with boiled wool and luckily for me the thrift stores abound with cardigans made of this wonderful wool. I’ve been collecting it for a while and have made finger-free gloves from it because it is such a dense warm weave. Maybe because it is so cold today, I decided to make some boiled wool mittens and to incorporate a couple of shearling collars I cut from leather coats. These are the coziest mittens, lined with soft plaid wool and wrists snugged in with sheepskin cuffs. I am working on a pink pair right now and a couple more colours which I hope to show you tomorrow.

I am going out on my bicycle soon and I may just be tempted to pull on a pair of these!

time for finger-free gloves

November 11, 2013 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

ffredIn Southern Ontario we’ve had a hint of snow and so I have been thinking more about warm finger-free gloves. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with different versions and I’m not sure which are my favourites.  Here are the newest ones — made from boiled wool with sweater cuffs for extra warmth. I like the way these fit and cover much of your hand while still leaving your fingers free. At the bottom are examples of all three styles–each designed to bring a boost of colour, style and warmth to your day. My two favourite sources of inspiration favour the lime green ones in the middle. As for me, right now I am siding with the red ones above. But I do love the funky striped sleeves of colour. My friend June says they can be worn indoors ‘like a bracelet’. All will be available at the annual sale and possibly on-line after November 24.

And for the curious, the hooked rug pictured below is my very, very first hooked rug, a Deanne Fitzpatrick pattern of three Maritime houses with my own border of wingless birds! And I’ve been putting at least one bird on every hooked rug since–evolved now to include wings and feet!

for the love of textiles

November 8, 2013 by Birdbrain 3 Comments

ffI’ve been in a marathon of slicing, piecing and sewing strips of recycled sweaters. I have bins and bins of my favourite bits which I have saved over the years. I’ve always made mittens from the larger pieces, but decided this year that I would use combinations of my favourites in some finger-free gloves. Such a pleasure, both remembering the piece and combining it with others to make a funky fashion statement.

And all the while I have been thinking of my father. He made me my first loom when I was eight years old, and I chose turquoise and magenta wool from my mother’s knitting basket to weave a hot mat. And ever since, I have been in a deep romance with woollens. But I think my father did more than make the first loom. I think he passed on his own love of fibre. His paternal grandparents owned a woollen textile mill in Glasgow, (before, so I understand,  some family member drank the profits). In my teenage years he loved to accompany us to the mills in Hespeler or the much closer fabric stores on Ottawa Street in Hamilton. I remember him in his red plaid woollen pants, his harris tweed jackets and his jaunty wool hat with the feather. He was always finding a bolt hidden under some others that he thought was the best quality and pulling it out for our perusal. And he was a great critic as the creations were coming to life, even known to help pin a hem.

I think of him these days as I am alone with the sewing machines. My trusty industrial is named after him. It’s always a good thing to let your memory wander to visit those you have loved and  to say a quiet thank you.
