sketching and hooking red shoes

I was away on the weekend so I had a chance to sketch more than I usually do. I am thinking of hooking my shoes, so am doing some sketches first. I got the idea in class at Hooked in the Mountains last November where I ended up hooking the red high-heeled pump below.

I went searching for this image from one of David Hockney’s sketch books. Then here are some pics from the Mulberry, which I visited two days in a row. Great architectural details, great coffee, great sketching ambience. I’ve posted more pictures on instagram. Click the button on the right to check them out.

still feels like winter

It still feels like winter in Ontario. There is a  north wind and temperatures hover still around freezing. Drawing tulips makes me feel more like spring. I am taking a great sketching course and doing a sketch a day–this one fast and careless, just to let spring in a little.

The blue 3spot tote is almost done–and I am loving it. It’s the last of the distressed blue with a black bottom and carry straps. I hope to post it Monday.

learning and making change

I am at the gallery this afternoon; it’s one of my favourite places. And for the first time have internet because I am using my phone as a personal hotspot. How cool is that? Learned that from my son on the weekend. We also made a few changes to the blog — navigation is now on the right to the on-line store and to a couple of new locations. I downloaded instagram to my phone and have been having lots of fun with it as you can see from the first photo. I’ve also set up a Facebook page for birdbrain. I hope to use both of these spots to post some new work as well as some of my sketches. I am just experimenting — not sure what at this point is the best way to go — the last thing I want to do is to create more work for myself away from the actual creating. So we will see.

Here is the Blue Luna with one of my favourite models. This bag is actually sold now and soon on its way to a new home. I have taken what is left of this beautiful leather and combined it with some black recycled leather, to make a new tote. It is called the Blue 3spot and you can see it in its early stages on instagram.

I received a lovely note and photo from Cathy in Toronto who won the pouch in the anniversary draw. It arrived on her birthday–what luck!  This photo reminds me of the gnome in Amelie–that pesky bird with attitude can show up anywhere! The pouches are sold out in the store right now, but I will be making more. I was in the city for a couple of days. Went to the One-of-a-Kind show on Good Friday–crazy busy–but did find some great things. I’ve said here before that I try to buy only second-hand or hand-made–and this is a great place for hand-made. Goodies below: a new wallet from Rimanchik and tube scarf in organic cotton from Katie Walker — and my must visit — Lousje and Bean. They have a brick and mortar store in St. Catherines, but it’s always fun to see them at the show. Their designs, fabrics and craftsmanship are tops.
