bags and purses

the rough case

August 26, 2012 by Birdbrain 6 Comments

I have been saving several pieces of brown leather — some of it is from a great old bomber jacket, other pieces from upholstery remants. All of it is lovely supple leather with lines and grain marks–this leather has character. This morning I decided to use some of it to make a small case. I envisioned this as a case for passport, iphone and  other essentials. I even used a recycled zipper. When it came to rivets, I remembered I had these great French brass rivets which were too heavy-duty for my normal bags–but turned out to be perfect here–they give this great old leather a functional or industrial look — very simple, maybe even classy!

The bag is 10″ x 6″, unlined, with a small slip pocket inside and a screenprinted birdbrain label. This case is the first in a series. If you can think of any refinements — please leave a comment or email me.

pencil cases

August 23, 2012 by Birdbrain 2 Comments

I have had several questions about my pencil cases. I decided to post them here–and shortly they will be in the shop along with the leather pouches. If you are interested in one of these before they get to the shop, please send me an email, or leave a comment here. There are five pencil cases here showing first the front and then the back–all from recycled or remnant leather. They are 9″x4″ with heavy-duty zippers and fine black lining; $22. plus postage.

recycling therapy

August 14, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

Making my colour therapy pouches makes me so happy.! These are the first of this year’s batch. They are all made from recycled leather garments or leather remnants. Each pouch has a different colour on the front and back, and sometimes two or three colours on one side. I use every tiny piece I have. Some of them are small pieces of my favourites–on  the front pouch is the very last piece of the cobalt blue skirt that has been in many pouches beginning with Wendie’s. Using recycled leather is always bittersweet–you can never find more of the perfect piece. Once the skirt or jacket is gone, there is no replacing it. At the back of this picture is a red leather pouch, sewn in diagonals, from an early jacket I bought at the local Salvation Army. It is like butter–and on the back of that pouch is the biker leather–my very first purchase of recycled leather, some biker pants from a thrift store on St. Hubert near my son’s place in Montreal. Ah I reminisce! But that is part of the therapy–reliving the day you bought the leather, thinking of the lovely things it has become, and the people who are enjoying them now. This is the joy of repurposing castoff things–the making and the remembering.

new fuchsia luna bag all ready to go

August 12, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

I am back in the studio for a couple of days getting caught up on some orders.  First on the list was a fuchsia luna bag. This is one of my favourite leathers and styles: it is a bright pop of colour with two pockets on the outside and three inside. It is 14″x 13″x5″ and the adjustable strap is 51″ full out, so that it can be worn across your body or shortened to tuck under your arm.

I will be at the post office tomorrow and this bag along with a couple of other small pouches will be on its way to Virginia!

sewing, birds and links

August 1, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

I have some orders for bags to fill so I am back in the studio. This one is one of my favourites, the Luna bag in magenta. There is a picture of one in the photo blog column. It has a zip closing, two pockets on the front and 3 inside and it is 12x14x5 inches with a long adjustable handle. This is the perfect bag for fall as it holds all your essential gear and provides a lovely shot of colour.  The next order is for the same bag in red, also a favourite! These bags will be on their way to the US in a couple of weeks. As I sew, I am giving some thought to changing the way I do things this year — will keep you updated on any news here. In the meantime, if you would like to order a bag just let me know at xine@birdbraindesigns.ca.

I received some new birds as gifts recently. Here is the first, a Hoopoe, from Scotland.  Very inspiring, love the colours, the crest and the polka dots. Just perfect on my denim jacket pocket.

And now some links to great stuff I have been seeing. I hope that you will check them out. It is an eclectic list: a great article, a great recipe, a fabulous interview and a delightful blogpost. I’m off to the cottage for a few days of hooking and sketching. Will check in again next week.

~an excellent article on TED Talks in the NYer  here. This is not just a backgrounder on the TED process and production, but a review of the recent tech developments which are now so wound into our lives.

`my favourite granola recipe and one I am always asked for here. The best part is it makes LOTS.

~a wonderful podcast of Eleanor Wachtel’s interview with Maggie O’Farrell here. If you have read O’Farrell’s books, particularly The Hand that First Held Mine  & The Disappearing Act of Esme Lennox, you will learn lots. If you haven’t you will find yourself rushing to the nearest bookstore to pick them up. I highly recommend both.

a day in Toronto

July 13, 2012 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

I love the graphics in Toronto. These two heartening messages are right near my favourite leather stores. I couldn’t resist sharing them with you.

And then there is the leather. Yesterday was a good day. I buy small ends of leather and make one or, at most, two items. The exceptions are the flocked magenta pieces which I purchased to make a luna bag as featured to the right in the photo bar. I also stocked up on good quality coloured zippers–as  you can see the choice is endless. Now I just have to get back to the studio!

small leather zip bags

May 16, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

Right now I am riding my bike as much as I can. A week today I leave for Italy–a biking and barging holiday–which will require more distance than I am used to. I have a city bike with baskets on the front and back and I bike everywhere I can in the city–to the market, the grocery store, my exercise class–but no great distance, ever. Belleville, my small town, has a wonderful network of trails along the bay and the river and these are my favourite biking routes. However,  I will soon be graduating to an italian beauty and 50 kms a day. I plan to blog from the barge–so will report on my adventure!

In the meantime I have been making small things. And I am learning abut my process as I go. In my head are some new bags for the fall. I’m doing my casual research, asking the people of style in my life the three top things they need in a bag, and eyeing the new leather I bought in Montreal and Toronto. I love making pieces from recycled remnants as you see here, but I also love a brand new large piece of Italian pebbly leather — and I have some great colours. There is no substitute for  the substantial weight and durability of this leather–great for big bags made to carry lots. But in the meantime, I am fooling around with little pieces, combining colour and texture. These cases will make their way to the shop soon too.

new work

May 8, 2012 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

Here are some of the new pieces I have been working on. They are made from remnant pieces of beautiful grainy leather I have collected here and there. I like to make the linings have a story too–the purple started life as a Jaegar skirt–gorgeous cotton; the green and orange is Tanzanian cotton, a gift from the Principal of the school I taught at in Metangwe. The colours are the colours of the Kenyan sky and soil. Both pouches have removable wrist straps and small leather pockets inside. And both are destined for the shop.

Here are some smaller pieces, also made from remnants, (the small photo on the left shows the reverse sides). The red and black is a great pencil case, the fuchsia and lime a coin pouch.  All four of these pieces, and I hope some more, will be in the shop by the end of the week. That is definitely on my list! I have also been dyeing for the wedding rug–and will post results soon. In the meantime, I hope you are enjoying these lovely spring days–here in Ontario, the lilacs are just out and the cardinal’s nest outside my kitchen window brings flashes of stunning colour.

my favourite things montréalais

May 6, 2012 by Birdbrain 2 Comments

I spent the morning in the studio and I want to show you what I made. But that will have to wait until tomorrow. A beautiful sunny afternoon and some bike riding intervened, so a couple of pouches are done, yes, minus the riveting which I hope to get to later tonight. But, I wanted to list some of my favourite things in Montreal, just in case you find yourself there, or want to check them out on line.

1. We ate at Crudessence my first night in the city. This is a charming small place on Rachel which serves delicious raw vegan meals as well as take-out and prepared foods. They have a cookbook available, but their website has lots of information, including recipes of their most famous dishes. Have a look! You may become a convert!

2. Myco Anna on St. Laurent is a favourite of mine. I first encountered the design label  several years ago at the Salon des Métiers D’Art, Montreal’s huge Decmember craft show. Much of the Myco Anna clothing is made from recycled fabrics. Since then the shop has grown to include other Canadian designers of both clothing and bags. I discovered the amazing work of Annie Thompson–her personal baggage collection is very inspiring for a bag-maker like me–great combinations of colour and fabric. However, I was really taken by the design work of Advika and bought this top made of organic cotton and soy. For me it is the perfect combination of style and comfort–plus it is designed and made in Canada of a renewable and biodegradable fabric. Perfect!

new CB2

May 5, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

Getting back into the studio. This version of the CB2 is made from the leather left over when a friend had her new skirt shortened. It is a beautiful buttery cocoa, lined with batik cotton. The CB2 pouch is designed to be carried alone or popped into a bigger bag. Small leather pocket inside and detachable wrist strap.  L 6″ x W 9″ x D 3″
