sketching in the frigid weather

January 10, 2017 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

Sunday mornings are the best for sketching. The city is quiet and I can park easily and sketch views otherwise unavailable. But this past Sunday was frigid and my feet were nearly frozen after I completed this sketch. I think the cold distorted my vision too–I’ve made the yellow building much taller than it really is. behind-front-jan-8-16

This sketch was completed at home the next day. Over the course of this year I am going to try to sketch as many of the historic buildings in the city as I can. Even though this one is on a city street, it has the feeling of a country setting. This was done without my usual ink outline, so seems softer. Lots to experiment with and work on this year–hope to do a sketch a day around the city, improving  technique and composition. Goals. That’s what the new year is about, right?west-hill-house

2016 sketching part 2 scotland in september

January 4, 2017 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

I have not posted many of the Scotland sketches before so here are some of the most memorable. Going through the sketchbook brings each day of the trip back. There is nothing quite like sketching on the outer edge of the continent or in the very location of a bloody battle you have heard about all your life. All but one of these sketches were done on sight, (as you can tell from the mucky marks on the paper) and sometimes paint was added later. balluchulish

a look at 2016 sketching part 1

January 2, 2017 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

2016-sketchbooksI had no plan to photograph my pile of sketchbooks, but when I lined them up I was astounded at just how many there were. My plan was to choose a few of my favourite sketches and post them as a review of the year as I did last year. But I just couldn’t resist stacking them and taking a photo.

When I started sketching last January I had two goals: improve the composition of my sketches and work on the depth of colour. I’ve chosen my favourite sketch from each month and I think overall they reflect an attempt to work on both goals. And just as important, they evoke the feeling of time and place for me, the weather, the company, the mood.

This first sketch is was done in Picton Ontario, sitting in a parked car with my great friend A, she in the front seat, and I behind her. It actually was done in late December, but I’m including it because it is in the first sketchbook.picton house

This is January’s sketch. I parked on the side street facing the Moodie cottage in Belleville. This sketch is particularly meaningful to me because I once lived in that apartment behind the main house.moodie house

February’s sketch is also in Belleville. Again I was in the car, parked behind the main street. My favourite building, the City Hall, is peeking over the old stone chimneys of Belleville’s early storefronts.back of front feb 16

This is on the road to Napanee, the town next to ours. Again, sketched from the car.road to Napanee

This one was sketched in April, but it was warm enough for me to be sitting on a bench in Stratford Ontario. Recorded are the people who came by to comment.stratford-april-15-2016

This is my favourite sketch of the year. I was sitting on a bench behind the City Hall in Kingston to capture this view.behind kingston city hall

Again Kingston and the same Church tower, from a different spot.st george's june 17

I’ll continue tomorrow with the next 6 months, including our trip to Scotland.

favourite New Yorker covers 1

December 17, 2016 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

For the last two years I have been enjoying the New Yorker Cover page-a-day calendar. A different New Yorker cover, sometimes from more than 75 years ago, was the highlight of my early morning, along with steamed milk and strong coffee. So I am very very disappointed to learn that there will be no 2017 version of the daily Cover-Calendar. Over the next week or so I’m gong to share some of my favourites beginning with this 34 year old gem by Lonni Sue Johnson. I love watercolour sketches of buildings and this one is particularly charming with the ochre sky and cartoonish cars almost obscured by snow banks. On doing a little research on Lonni Sue, I learned her fascinating story. You can read about her anterograde amnesia here and the restorative power of art.

darkest darks

November 18, 2016 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

Earlier this week I was in Dundas for a watercolour class. At lunchtime I walked to the Detour Cafe for a cup of their coffee. It was a beautiful day and the shadows were deep under the awning. I did very little of this sketch on site–instead I took a photo and worked on it later at my open studio day. There I had lots of encouragement to ‘go darker’.   I had only time to finish the building and add the xmas wreath hanging from the lamp post, but somehow this seemed ok. A memory of the wonderful November sunlight (happily not an oxymoron this year) we have been enjoying.

pages from my sketchbook

napanee-street-scape

I have been trying to sketch more these days, both at home and on the road. These sketches are from the last couple of weeks–stretching my grasp of perspective and pushing myself to add more colour and depth. The sketch below was the hardest as I was angled above my beloved train station. I spent so much time getting the angle that I had no time for colour even though the train was 25 minutes late! The notes on the page make the rest clear enough–I wondered about leaving them and decided it was fine to record publicly the sad events of last week and the wonderful restorative power of Mystical Landscapes at the AGO.

Most of these were done from inside–but the last one, in Guelph, was done sitting outdoors at a cafe–in mid November!

sketches of the Scotland journey part two

October 4, 2016 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

We have been home a week, but I am still adjusting and feeling like I’m not on top of anything. Life always seems to return full-on. But, for now a few more sketches. They  follow our trip to the very north of Scotland, over to the Orkneys and then back down the west coast to Ullapool. They were all done outside, sometimes in the rain, sometimes completed on the spot and sometimes paint added later. What I love most about sketching is how each sketch, no matter the quality,  brings back the essence of my time in that location–the day, the weather, the conversations around etc. So you are experiencing the place on a deeper level not only when you are doing the sketch, but each time you look at them again. glencoe

home from Scotland and in touch once again

September 28, 2016 by Birdbrain 2 Comments

I am just home from 17 days in Scotland. We were busy and the internet was spotty, so I had the chance to do only one post. But I’m back now. Thanks for sticking with me!

At the start of the sketchbook I drew a map so I could chart the journey. We spent a few days in Ayr (which is not on the map) with my wonderful cousins before beginning our tour. We took four ferries, saw countless lochs and mountains and stayed in small hotels on the coasts. Fortunately for us, the weather was outstanding–I wore my warm coat only once, and that was back in Glasgow. We kept a good pace, but I drew at every opportunity, often making a quick standing sketch and adding paint later.

A few things I brought home from the trip: My Scottish grandmother spoiled me with hand-knitted clothing as I was growing up an ocean away and ever since I have loved Scottish textiles. Here you can see some Harris Tweed (more on that in another post), a hand-knitted hat for a little person in my life and socks the colour of the landscape. At bottom, an inspiring book of Hebridean sketches–again more glimpses of these sketches later.

I had a chance to sketch the main pedestrian street of Ayr with the Wallace monument in the sunshine and Culzean castle in the rain.ayr 1

Edinburgh is one of my very favourite cities.  I sat on various benches doing quick sketches, trying to capture the remarkable architecture.  These are views of the Old Town.edinburgh

It will take a few days to share my sketches…and then I’ll be back in the studio finishing my rugs and making some new things for a show at the beginning of November. So more posts very soon.

holiday in the highlands

September 18, 2016 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

Ullapool Harbour

We are into our second week in Scotland and this is the first minute I’ve had to write on the blog. When I say minute, it’s a bit of an exaggeration. It’s just taken over 10 minutes for this sketch to download. So I won’t be adding more today.

We have been in Orkney for the past few days. I’ve tried to sketch every minute I can, including in the high wind on the ferry. My goal is to finish the sketchbook this time with little drawings as well as some more finished sketches.

I loved Kirkwall and sketched both the sandstone buildings and the craggy countryside. The Scots are incredibly friendly and I’ve had lots of people stopping to talk and offer comments and critiques. The highlands provided stunning material for sketching and the bonus is that we have had sun! Everyone is telling us its the best weather of the summer.

And now the outer Hebrides. A visit to Harris with its textles and rugged landscape has long been my wish. I read Peter May’s Lewis Trilogy in preparation for the trip, so I’m even more excited to see some of the romantic placenames come to life. I’ll report on my visit one way or another–probably from Canada.

last cottage weekend

September 7, 2016 by Birdbrain 3 Comments

I spent some time sketching the cottage this past weekend, sitting out on the rocks and looking up. We are soon going on a trip and I want to sketch faster and more often than I’ve managed on previous trips. So I was giving it some practice.  The second sketch here is my favourite, even though it has a big runback. The shadows and the ink line have a light touch which I’m striving for. I want to remember to take a moment to plan, even do a value sketch, find the eye level line and draw a casual border before before beginning the sketch. We will be gone just under three weeks and I’ll try to post as I go.
