recycled leather

recycling t-shirts and leather

December 28, 2012 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

I have begun to hook with strips of t-shirt material and it is taking some getting used to.  First of all the cutting of the strips is a challenge. I am currently using a rotary cutter, but that takes so much time! Then there is deciding on the width of the strip–wider seems better. And I am discovering that cotton does not behave in the accommodating way wool does. In addition, finding good colours is a challenge–I have slipped in some dyed lime green nylons in this square, just for some pizzazz.

With all these negatives, why am I doing this, you ask? Well it is a challenge. And it is recycling. But the main reason is I am going to Kenya in January and hoping to teach the women in the village there how to hook rugs. I was looking for material which would be locally available and thought immediately of this source of cotton. So I am experimenting with all facets of this new hooking and will keep you posted.

And here is the next leather bag–still very much in process. This will be a big travel tote with handles and a cross-body strap. I order to make something this size, I am using two leather sources, a pebbly bomber jacket and a pair of leather pants. The colours seem to work well together, so I am just trying to work with the many seams in the jacket. Will let you know how this goes as well.

more rough pouches

October 2, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

The rough pouches have been getting a very good response so I decided to dig into my box of upholstery leather and see what I could come up with.  Each pouch is one-of -a-kind with a zipper closing and an interior leather pocket large enough to hold your cards. The small pouches are ideal for carrying your phone and other essentials, fit easily into a larger bag or work well on their own. The larger pouches can hold a passport and boarding pass. Today’s colours espresso, walnut, mocha and teal.

and now a rough tote

September 26, 2012 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

I have been working on a tote made from two leather jackets, both wonderful leather–rugged brown and pebbly black. I have always liked the black, brown combination and it seems to really work here. This tote is a bit oversized, 16″ wide, 13″ high and a 7″ bottom, so it will hold lots of stuff including an ipad, or laptop.

This is just a peek because I haven’t worked it all out. But I think I am really going to like it. Next step, design sturdy straps and think about the lining–lots of pockets for sure.

another cobalt clutch

September 25, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

This leather originated in a bomber jacket, circa 1982. I am calling it cobalt, but it is a bit more on the purple side than earlier clutches. Beautiful. I have been saving this leather which is soft and smooth for some time, but this week decided to make a clutch. This is a very useful size  (6 x 8.5 x 1.5″) as it holds all your essentials, so can stand on its own, or can be stowed in a larger bag.

Inside is a small pocket which is a good size for your cards and a lining of sunshine yellow cotton print. The wristlet has a detachable clip for those days when you want to use it inside a bigger bag. You can find this pouch in the shop.

tomatoes and 2 more rough pouches

September 24, 2012 by Birdbrain 3 Comments

I love September. Last week I bought yet another half-bushel of tomatoes. They are in a big pile in the kitchen challenging me. So, yesterday I made 12 jars of Tomato Marmalade. I had never heard of it before, never mind made it. My version, found here, had tomatoes, oranges, lemons, sugar and ginger. That’s it. I doubled the recipe–and then read that reaching the gel stage is difficult, especially if you double the amounts. Well…no worries…in an hour and a bit I had a wonderful gooey tomato concoction which is very delicious! I’m imagining it with roast pork. I like the sound of this recipe too–and may try it next.

I also found my way to the sewing machines for a couple more rough pouches. Each one is its own colour match–based on what is in the remnant bin and the zipper drawer.

I really like this design. It is useful, durable and a wonderful punch of colour.  Below are the three sizes I have made so far. I am working up to making a computer bag and large tote in this style. Stay tuned…

small rough pouches in colour!

September 23, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

I have long had a romance with turquoise and magenta. I remember a hot mat I wove in Brownies on a box loom my father made for me. It was–turquoise and magenta–and I thought it was beautiful. At a recent workshop we talked a lot about emotional connection to colour–Deanne talked about her mother’s turquoise fridge and the memories it evoked. I think these rich colours evoke the excitement I felt as a little girl when the brown paper packages arrived from my Scottish grandmother containing hand-knitted sweaters in the most beautiful hues. Those packages spoke love to me.

I had a number of small zippers and some small pieces of my favourite leathers. I decided to make some small rough pouches–no lining but a little pocket for subway tokens or other small treasures. And I have fallen for them–the little ones for change and the larger ones to pop in your tote with phone, cash, cards etc. A perfect injection of colour!

from studio to shop

May 14, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

Happy Monday! We had a lovely day yesterday with lunch at The O’Connor House in Deseronto. What a find this place is–a Victorian tea room with wonderful service, delicious food and attached to an antique/curiosity shop. I highly recommend a visit there if you are in Eastern Ontario. Btw, I took this photo with my new iphone, (that’s my finger smudge in the corner!) a big pot of delicious Earl Grey tea.

On to some news…

I have wanted a shop connected to the blog for some time. As a mother’s day present, Owen revamped the blog and added a shop button. Over the weekend I put some items in there–so if you get a chance, click top left and have a look. If you are interested in anything you see, just hit the contact button and send me an email.

I will be posting more of the small heart pouches and others today. The combining of assosrted coloured remnants is one of the most fun things I do. In the meantime, here area a couple of glimpses of the colourful, ordered chaos of the studio–one of my favourite places.

new CB2

May 5, 2012 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

Getting back into the studio. This version of the CB2 is made from the leather left over when a friend had her new skirt shortened. It is a beautiful buttery cocoa, lined with batik cotton. The CB2 pouch is designed to be carried alone or popped into a bigger bag. Small leather pocket inside and detachable wrist strap.  L 6″ x W 9″ x D 3″

spring, generosity and a rug hooking spine poem

April 17, 2012 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

We have had some signs of spring in the garden. The first few stocks of asparagus–soooo good–and a mother cardinal building a nest just outside the kitchen window. We have a perfect view of the goings-on!

And the postman just delivered a nice surprise package! My dear friend, Shelley in Mahone Bay, recently raided a Frenchie’s, (those of you who have visited this east coast hooker’s mecca will know how exciting that is!), and sent along three skirts, two in yummy shades of orange. The fourth leather garment in the photo was brought to me at the hook-in (my reputation is preceding me!) by Nancy–and what a lovely piece of leather it is too. Thanks so much to both of you!

And this is my attempt at a book spine poem defining what rug hooking means to me. Btw,  the bottom book is my Grade 12 English textbook!

If wool could talk:

famous lasting words

open secrets

the telling of lies

and poems to remember

think spring

March 12, 2012 by Birdbrain 1 Comment

I found a magenta skirt in a thrift shop some time ago. I knew it would make a great spring bag, such a bright, cheery colour. And here it is, lined with beautiful cotton from France, which, if you look carefully, tells you that summer is coming. The strap is long enough to wear across the body, but can be knotted to make it shorter. The bag is 13″ wide, 10.5″ tall, 3.5″ across the base, with a magnetic closure, four inside pockets and a front zip pocket for your keys.
