back in the studio

October 5, 2016 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

I bought this material in Ireland lat year. I love its punch of colour and its durability–it has a coating which you can wipe clean. I made a smaller city tote last year and it is standing up well to the rigours of a busy life. This tote measures 18″ x 15″ x 5″ and has a large double leather pocket on the outside. Inside are two more useful pockets. So it’s ready for all your toting needs. It is lined in navy denim, has leather carry handles and bottom and a durable metal zipper. striped-tote

Here you can see the Bird in a Hurry graphics on the large pocket as well as the double leather pocket on the other side. Great for organizing your things. This sturdy pouch stands up on its own, ready to be filled with art supplies, books or your travel needs. In the shop todaystriped-tote-interior

new 121 bag

June 8, 2016 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

Here are two samples of the new 121 bag, cobalt blue and pewter. These are each made with remnants of simply beautiful pieces of leather. The bags are approximately 9″ tall and 8″ wide with darted bottoms for extra room and a 46″ cross-body strap which can be shortened with a knot. The rounded flap is backed in black leather and closes with a magnetic snap. The bags are lined in 100% cotton, the blue from Kenya and the tan polka dot from Ireland–both glimpsed in the last photo–with a leather phone pocket. This bag will hold all your essentials for a evening out or as an extra with a larger tote. They will be in the on-line store tonight.121 a

Goderich sketches

May 25, 2016 by Birdbrain 2 Comments

In April, my friend Anne and I went on a sketching trip to Goderich. I posted a couple of sketches here and planned to post the others, but did not get to it until today. Since the start of that trip I have been using the Hand.book Travelogue sketchbook in the 8″ x 8″ size and I like the format very much. It’s not too big to tote around yet gives ample room so that the sketch does not feel crowded.

Below is the Goderich train station. It was a sunny, very cool April day down by Lake Huron and we sat bundled against the wind to sketch this wonderful building. It had been moved from its previous location, because like so many railway stations in Canada, it is no longer in use. But it has been beautifully restored and houses a restaurant now.goderich b

What follows here are some of the cottages on the Goderich streets. You can see I am still working out how to do the windows. It’s an on-going search. goderich d

zippered travel pouches

April 8, 2016 by Birdbrain 4 Comments

I’ve had a couple of requests for coated cotton pouches for travel. I spent an afternoon this week using up some remnants to make a few small makeup bags, big enough for a tooth brush and other travel essentials, but compact enough to fit in your tote. And to give a boost of colour!

april pouches

From the left two striped coated cotton from Chartres, one with a lime zipper one with a cobalt one. Then two magenta flying birds with cobalt and fuchsia zippers and then I could not resist two more wonky birds. The wonky birds are lined with water-resistant orange waxed canvas. The remaining are lined with crisp blue and white striped canvas. A few of these will be in the shop very soon.

a new Marimekko bag

March 6, 2016 by Birdbrain 2 Comments

This bag is made of the same fabric you saw here, but this one is a smaller version with a cross-body strap. The brilliance of these Marimekko graphics is that they work large or small and each side of the bag provides a different colour punch. This particular bag is 14.5″ wide, 11.5″ tall and 3″ across the base. The leather trim is both recycled from a beautiful man’s coat and a new piece for the strap. Inside it has four pockets: two leather pockets for phone and keys and then two canvas pockets, one with a zipper.  More views below.

This shot shows you the interior canvas pockets with the birdbrain robin and for the first time, a leather label. I now have my own birdbrain branding iron, so all future bags will have an embossed label. Such fun!marimekko cross body int

another 1510 backpack in black

January 20, 2016 by Birdbrain 2 Comments

Another black 1510 backpack is ready to go. This one has all the features of the 1510 including the back pocket with zipper for security, the double bottom for durability, adjustable shoulder straps and a convenient grab handle. It secures with leather cords as well as a tab closure. This is simply great leather with a polished look. Inside this one is lined in water-resistant black waxed canvas with two bright red leather pockets and a clip for your keys. The leather under the flap is repurposed from a man’s jacket and the knob closure is from a vintage belt. Width 12″. height 13″ depth 4″.

I’ll have another backpack in great cognac leather in the on-line store very soon. And if you are interested in a black one similar to this (with a different vintage closure) just let me know. Also in the works are a distressed cognac tote and a new small shoulder bag. I am hoping the latter part of January and February will be a productive period. And I haven’t forgotten the Annie rug–hope to photograph this weekend. Thank you all for your interest.

happy 2016

December 31, 2015 by Birdbrain 3 Comments

annie dec 05

This is my fifth time to wish you blog readers a happy start to a new year. All the very best for 2016. I so appreciate that you visit the blog and sometimes leave comments. I know there are zillions of blogs out there and I value every visitor who stops by this one. I’m planning on making some improvements this month to make it easier to see what is available and what you can order. But more on that later.

Meanwhile, I’ve been spending time over the holidays hooking on my Annie rug which is about time and how we spend it. I’m finally making headway. The background moves from blue at each end into green and then back to blue in the centre. I am finishing up the green sections. I simply love combining various shades and textures and hooking them in circles. It makes a game, hooking the circles and then filling in the spaces left. Addictive when you get going. And listening to good radio which is so available as NPR compiles its best broadcasts. I’ve also been watching a stunning PBS documentary called The Royal Paintbox which here in Canada we can get through TVO.

Back to the blog for a minute. A blog provides an interesting vantage point from which to see your life as it passes. Over the past 4+ years, the blog has chronicled the progress on three big rugs and several smaller hooking projects as well as countless bags and totes and lots of sketches. I hope to have a second look at some of these which I have posted in the past year–bags I thought were good, sketches which evoke great memories and, in a week or so, a photo of the progress I’m making on Annie.

But in the meantime, enjoy the last hours of 2015, take some time to reflect on the good things and then plunge ahead into 2016. I’ll be here.

Dublin fabric shops

October 12, 2015 by Birdbrain 2 Comments

It is always delightful for me to find great fabric when I am travelling. My friend Wendie (do check out her blog and the adorable minion hat and mitten set) suggested I look out for Cath Kidston when we were in Ireland. I’d actually kind of forgotten about it as there is so much to see and do,  but at the end of a long Dublin day when we were walking back to the hotel,  I spotted the shop at the top of Grafton Street. I made my way to the basement and found the fabric below. I’m always on the lookout for coated fabric for totes and it is very hard to find. I thought this red would be great with the tan cotton dots for lining.dub fab 2 But the best part of the visit was the advice of the sales attendant. She was so interested in what I wanted–she too loved fabric and sent me on the lookout for Murphy Sheehey. This is a small store in a warren of streets off Grafton–but inside jammed with wonderful fabric. From there, again with advice from another sales attendant, I found the The Cloth Shop not far away.  We were travelling light with small suitcases, so I had to curb my desires for so much of the fabric–but this is what I ended up with, heavy enough. The piece on the left is coated waterproof cotton sure to be a tote with blue or orange leather. The piece on the right is French cotton canvas and reminds me of this fabric. The middle piece? Probably lining for leather bags, rich colour, great wearability.dub fab1But here is the best…coated cotton with a flock of every kind of crazy bird. I bought all that was on the bolt, about 3 metres. I can see all sorts of possibilities for these critters. They make me smile.bird fab 1

new leather bags — medium PTBP & Sherbrooke

October 24, 2014 by Birdbrain Leave a Comment

slate pt backp 1

slate pt packp 2

slate ptbpI am leaving for a couple of weeks–but will stay in touch here. In the meantime I wanted to show you two more new bags which will be available when I come home. The first is another part-time backpack, this time in slate leather. The camera finds it hard to capture this lovely leather–it has a shimmer which lets you know it is not black, but its own neutral shade. This PTBP is larger than the first one: 12.5″ wide, 11″ tall and 4″ deep with a double leather bottom, wide leather strap, exterior zipper pocket and interior zip/slip pocket in birdbrain canvas and a leather phone pocket. This bag converts easily from cross-body to backpack and can be worn with the pocket against your back for added security.

The second bag is a Sherbrooke bag in tobacco leather. I have been using one like this and find it a great size. It has a zipper pocket outside and three repurposed leather pockets inside. Height 9.5″, width 9.5″ with a long adjustable strap. A perfect day bag which can easily slip inside a tote if you like. High quality zippers and hardware.sherbrooke 1

september and the studio

September 3, 2014 by Birdbrain 3 Comments

gable cartoon sept 1This cartoon appeared in the Globe and Mail on Monday. The sketch really captures the wistful feelings I have at summer’s end, even though I am not going back to school, or even to a fixed schedule. The feeling comes with Labour Day.  And then Jian’s piece yesterday with which he began the fall season is an important reminder of  ‘the sombre summer’ many people experienced.

So it’s with all that in my mind that I’ve been working in the studio. It is what I love about studio work; my hands and part of my brain are busy, but I can listen and process while I work. It’s activity that allows, even encourages reflection. I’ve decided to do a series of bags. Usually I make a ‘one-off’, a version of a previous one, maybe, but with enough variation that I am starting afresh each time. I made a blue bucket bag (out of this leather) and I like the proportions so well I decided to make a couple more. I’m varying some of the details, but the proportions are the same. Here is the first, the Blueberry Bucket:bbucket 2

bbucket 3This bag is made from durable pebbly leather, has a front inset zipper pocket, and three slip pockets inside. It is lined in striped red canvas, has metal hardware, including protective feet on the base, and an adjustable strap which can be worn cross-body or over one shoulder.  It measures 10″ high, 13″ wide and is 4″ deep. It will be in the shop tomorrow.bbucket 4
